I remember reading in the archives a comment that Brendel was very fast on the keys. Not fast between the keys, but he did not linger on a key very long, making for a distinctive sound. Those are objective comments, much better than feminine or masculine. I compare Brendel to Uchida, who seems to be the antithesis of Brendel. To my ear, she seems to linger on each key, creating a sound that I do not like. I have read reviews that complain about her use of rubato, which probably adds to my dislike of her. Goode seems to be similar to Brendel, but not near as fast on the release. Pires also seems to be quick on the release, but she has a certain something (maybe timing?) that makes her my favorite. Too bad she hasn't recorded more Mozart piano concertos lately, as the Erato CDs aren't as good as her two later DG CDs. The only word that comes to my mind concerning Zacharias is brash, but maybe he's just recorded more closely than others. The only Zacharias CD I have is his double-piano concertos work with Hinrichs, which I really like, but two pianists playing at once confuse my ears. I'd like to read other attempts at quantifying pianists. Maybe I can figure out why I like some Mozart pianists and dislike others.

Oops, lingering probably IS rubato, sorry.
