I think that Rachmaninov's ISLE OF THE DEAD is a greatly under-appreciated masterpiece... it always has a profound effect on me every time I hear it... despite the somber depths of it's soundscape, I find it life-affirming, just like Barber's ADAGIO FOR STRINGS... as the Buddhist philosophy states 'all life is sorrowful'... I realize this sounds morose, but it does cause me to think about the miracle of my existence in this world... IMHO.

I think 'Isle of the Dead' is much-appreciated and well-represented. To name a few...Reiner, Koussie, Previn...and with better sound, Ashkenazy, Jansons, Litton.

Not to mention the big ones: Mitropoulos, Reiner, and Horenstein.

Berkshire has a disk by the 'Prague Piano Duo' that includes a piano duet transcription by Otto Taubmann. The Isle is beautiful in this version also.

Enjoy,
