I know that there were some questions about the new Archipel release of a '1953 Rosbaud B5' (#ARPCD 0129)

I compared it to the Arkadia CD (#CDGI 746.1) and it is the same recording. To my ears, I prefer the Arkadia release in that it is not so heavily processed, but the Archipel is available and it's pretty cheap.

According to a Rosbaud discography, the Bruckner 5th was recorded in May of 1962. This is entirely in line with Rosbaud's other Bruckner studio recordings for SWF. Archipel's 1953 date is incorrect.

Thanks. I agree with you that the sound on the Arkadia issue is preferable. Best,

Not to belabor the issue, but, as the one who brought this CD to light on my June Qualiton new release posting, I am concerned.

This appears to be a misrepresentation of the CD by Archipel if you are correct. The write-up text from the June bulletin reads: 'First release on any format! Live recording 1953 good sound direct mastering as usual from Original Broadcast tape. Not to be missed. Please note that the tape was dirty, so we have at track 1 at the end, one small click, which we could not cut or delete completely. But overall the sound is excellent!'

Disregarding the hype concerning sound quality, it would be possible to distinguish this from the 1962 recording using their own statement. Was there an obvious glitch somewhere near the end of the 1st movement on the Archipel that isn't in the other recording? Since I do regular business with Qualiton, I am upset by the possibility of untruths in their promotion of this title.

Rosbaud Southwest German RSO 17-24/5/62 Arkadia CD 746.1 ..........75:53 - 20:11 16:51 14:49 24:02 Archipel CD 53 incorrectly dated 1953 -> Archipel CD 129 ................. 75:41 - 20:12 16:51 14:49 23:50

I think the timings provided by John in his discography are sufficient to know it's the same recording (his discography, by Joan Evans, lists a single extant recording of the work). BTW, Urania (I believe also a Qualiton label) did even worse with Rosbaud's Bruckner 8th when they released it with about 8 minutes of the Adagio chopped off (I know because I bought this recording for private use from the SWR archives). Beware of these labels.

As a radio program producer, many yrs ago I b/cast the Br5 w/Rosbaud (from SWF) & saved the tape... It is definitely 1962 not 1953... Archipel, like Urania and the now defunct Dante family (Alecchino, Lys, etc.) as well as Fono have often changed perf. dates to make them publishable under the '50-yr-laws' in the EU...
