Just picked up this new Sony set of 5CDs (£16 in UK HMV sale), of 17 sonatas played by Rudolf Serkin. I've only listened to a couple, and like the direct interpretations, but I find the sound quality remarkable for its age.

The recordings date from 1962 to 1980, most from the early- to mid-1970s, but the sound on the two I've heard from 1962 and 1975 was excellent (to my ears, played on a reasonably mid- to high-end system), particularly the latter (understandably).

I was expecting some tea-tray clattery sound, from reviews I've read of CBS's recordings of the piano from that period. Can't see much info about remasterings.

In the same series they've released Walter's Beethoven symphonies and Bernstein's Haydn and Sibelius.

Yep, I read them - I was just commenting on the fine sound (the posts above seemed to go off on any number of tangents...)
