Right to the point: I can only memorize by playing the notes one-at-a-time slowly and seeing them.

So (1) I play at tempo (if possible) to determine my fingering. Then (2) practice at tempo (if possible) to get the technique up. Then (3) play ssslllloooowwww to do the memorizing.

Anyone else experience this, or am I an abberation?

(By the way, I have no quarrel with 'slow-to-fast' is bad, perhaps because I worship Abby.)

Yes, I find that slow practice with a metronome definately helps with the 'mental' memory of a piece.
