Hi, I'm trying to locate sheet music for Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5, for solo piano. I found the following on Amazon, but not being a piano player, I don't know if they are for solo piano or for a whole orchestra. I found a version for duo piano on sheet-music.com, but that won't do either.

Piano Concertos Nos. 4 and 5 ('Emperor' : With Orchestral Reduction for Second Piano) http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0486284425/ qid=976512109/sr=1- 37/002-3894692-3928055

Complete Piano Concertos in Full Score (Music Series) http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0486245632/ qid=976512109/sr=1- 14/002-3894692-3928055

Correction : it is the concerto for Piano AND orchestra , so you buy the score either as piano with orchestra reduction or separate scores for piano , orchestra (for the conductor) and for each instrument. Usually people buy the piano and piano orchestra reduction edition.

The best idea is to actually see what you are buying, at a music store.

The concerto no. 5 is for piano and orchestra. Are you looking for the piano part? Just the piano part by itself without the orchestra or orchestral reduction? I don't know if that exists in isolated form.

Or are you talking about an arrangement of the concerto, for a solo piano without orchestra? That's an interesting idea, but I doubt if it exists. It would be full of musical compromises, as the piano part and the orchestral part would get in each other's way. For any normal purpose, whether for study or performance, you want either the version with orchestral reduction for second piano (the orchestral reduction is printed below the solo piano part, on the same page, not separately), or the original version, where the piano is just one of many instruments on the page.

A good way to get just the solo part for concertos used to be buying the Music Minus One LP. I presume they are now issued as CDs. Would this be a possible solution for you, Khartung?

I own copies of Beethoven's Piano Concertos 2, 3, 5 for solo piano which contain the complete solo piano part and the orchestral tuttis arranged for solo piano. In addition some orchestral parts appear on additional staves when for example the piano part doesn't have the main melodic interest. This might well be the sort of thing the poster had in mind but I should imagine it will be quite hard to get hold of. My copy of the 5th is titled:

BEETHOVEN'S WORKS Edited by J. MOSCHELES

COMPLETE EDITION No 5 ['5' entered by hand in ink]

GRAND CONCERTOS

FOR THE Piano Forte

with Accompaniments AD LIB Composed by

LOUIS VAN BEETHOVEN

OP. .....[no opus number entered]

LONDON Published by CRAMER, BEALE & Co., 201, Regent Street, & 67, Conduit Street

[and then, in very small print, which I had not noticed until now:]

NB. The tuttis of these Concertos have been adapted from the score, and small notes added to the Solos by Mr. Moscheles, so that they may be performed with or without accompaniments; when the full orchestra is employed the small notes in the stringed instrument parts must be omitted. The flute part which has been exprefsly arranged for this edition is only to be used when unaccompanied by other wind instruments.

I have the Music Minus One CD for the concerto #5 (http://www.minusone.com/site/site.cgi?page=index.html) , and it has the solo piano part, and underneath that (on the same page) is the orchestral reduction for second piano.
