I recently got the Malfitano/Dohnanyi recording. The 'ideal Salome' I knew before was Nilsson/Solti on CD, but the new DVD also has considerable strengths. Catherine Malfitano shows us a very intense version of Salome, not the young girl you may hear somewhere else. But in my opinion the super star is Bryn Terfel as Jochanaan who gave me the creeps when he claims the sins of Salome and her parents ('Wo ist er, dessen Sündenbecher jetzt voll ist?'. In addition the image and recording quality is very well.

Today Nilsson/Solti is still my preferred recording of this opera (because of the wonderful singers), but as a live recording the new DVD is also very respectable.

?!? Maria Ewing is not the only soprano to disrobe in the dance of seven veils, and this has absolutely nothing to do with her voice and singing.

It may be on DVD in Japan only, but I would recommend the Stratas/Boehm film highly.
