Hello,

I have a problem with my 1998 Bechstein piano: The right pedal is squeaking soul-destroying. Although I got someone to repair this squeaking about a year ago, the squeaking emerged again after some weeks.

Does anyone know the cause and how to repair that permanently ?

Thanks,

This is not an uncommon thing at all. There are a number of places in the pedal mechanisms where sqeaks can occur. I don't know of any guaranteed permanent fixes. It is like squeaky doors- things just need some lubrication periodically. It is usually not a problem to have the likely joint lubricated each time you have it tuned, which should be twice a year or so. However, there are a number of potential specialized lubricants which may be chosen, depending on materials present in the particular joint. For instance, a rubber-brass squeak might not neccessarily be best served by the same lubricant as a wood-leather squeak. Finding the correct lubricant for the joint can make the lubrication last much longer. So this goes to the knowledge and experience of the technician you have.

I had that problem about three months ago on my Yamaha G5. I was lucky because I found the cause right away: it was friction at an obvious place and easy to access, so I just put some vaseline on the metal rod around the area of friction, and it has been silent so far, but like I said I just got lucky with that, and I certainly wouldn't try this do-it-yourself experiment on a premium instrument like yours (without knowing what you're doing, which I didn't).
