Here's the deal:

Right now I have five Matthew Passions:

1) Mengelberg 2) Lehmann 3) Furtwangler 4) Herreweghe I 5) Gardiner

I have two more coming:

1) Weisbach 2) Ramin

I had Klemperer once but his tempos were so catatonic that I felt compelled to get rid of it.

Are there any newer recordings besides the ones listed above that I should be thinking about?

What about Scherchen?

Or anything roughly 1960-1980?

I'd be interested in what you have to say.

Herreweghe II Harnoncourt II Richter II Scherchen (stereo) Rilling (if you're a completest)

I keep seeing this attributed alternately to Goering and Goebbels. The next time someone posts it I'd like to see a footnote to *the original source*.

Certainly Rilling's most recent one on Hanssler, and Harnoncourt's third version on Teldec.

It's on the slow side, but never seems that way; superbly conducted, soloists varying between adequate and excellent, but pretty sloppy choral work, unfortunately. If you can find it, though, it's certainy worth hearing.

I have an odd soft spot for Richter's last recording, from 1979; I seem to be about the only person who prefers it to his much more famous 1958 version.
