Hi,

today I saw the Janacek's, Smetana's and Martinu's string quartets in a Brilliant Classics box, played by the Stamitz quartet. Opinions on these recordings?

Like the same group's Dvorak cycle, these were originally at full price on Bayer. At the Brilliant price (about 10 euros for the 5 discs at jpc!), they are irresistable. The Stamitz Qt Martinu is the best integral set by far, imo, and this is wonderful music that should be better known. Their Janacek and Smetana are good, if a bit mild-mannered for my taste (compared with, say, the Janacek or Prazak in the Janacek Quartets, the Hollywood in Smetana #1, and the Skampa in Smetana #2). I paid more for each of these discs than you're going to pay for all of them put together
