My Russian piano tuner, a man with an excitable temperament and an uneven grasp of English, said he could soften the tone on my Yamaha U3 by using some sort of steam treatment on the hammer felts. Anyone ever heard of this? If so, is it better than whatever the tried-and-true is?

Thanks for any reply.

Greetings, Yes, there are a number of techs doing this. Steam relaxes the felt fibers grasp of one another, allowing the hammer to soften. It is effective in many applications where the hammers are too hard, or where there is too much lacquer or other hardener already put in the hammer. It is also quite easy to ruin the hammers in a hurry, so I would suggest that you ask your excitable tuner for the name of someone that he has already voiced hammers for, and make up your own mind if his approach and execution is for you. Regards.
