Steinberg and his Pittsburgh Orchestra let loose with a live performance of Mahler's 1st in Lisbon, Portugal. This was the orchestra's first(and last?) visit to Lisbon, and they really raise the roof of the Cinema Tivoli (somewhere in downtown Lisbon). Many know the EMI studio recording, but this live Mahler 1 is pretty terrific. Has it appeared on any label? I'm not aware of any other live Steinberg Mahler 1sts.

I heard William Steinberg conduct the Mahler 1st symphony with the Pittsburgh SO in Dallas in the spring of 1966. I have and retain a copy of that EMI recording as a souvenir of that event.

Steinberg also conducted that work in a broadcast concert of the NYPO some time in the 1970's. Perhaps a copy is floating around out there...

(FWIW, in the fall of 1966, I moved to Philadelphia, where the first concert I attended in the Academy of Music was a guest appearance of the NYPO with Bernstein. They likewise performed the Mahler 1st symphony, this within days of having made their superlative recording of that
