Would the experts in this group have an opinion of Steinway quality during this time period (1987) on an 'M'? I looked at this instrument yesterday as it is for sale privately. It's had a rough life but is salvagable. The case needs more repair than just a touch up (walnut), a drink or two has been spilled on the treble tuning pins, the hammers need reshaped and voiced

Sounds like it was in a school or a bar. I'd be very concerned about the liquids in the tuning pins. That's a young piano, but it's getting a rough start. Those pins are probably tight now, but they will likely loosen prematurely. And good refinishing and rebuilding gets expensive. Most good rebuilding shops get between 15 and 30k to rebuild and refinish a piano. Keep that in mind when you consider an abused instrument. It might make more sense to shop around for a slightly more costly but better maintained piano of similar stature.
