Is the Steinway Style 3 piano any good if fully restored? I'm trying to find a piano with some nice wood carving/cabinet work, and found a style 3 from 1876 that would be nice if restored. But will it sound bad? I can't any info on the style 3. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I see what you mean by the lack of information about the Style 3. I've emailed Steinway&Sons office with a request for information, as well as asking what the restored 1800's Style 3 would sound like.

I'll let you know if I hear back from them. American office, they might have time off for Independance Day. A lot of people take extra time off. I'll keep you posted.

Try more than one search engine. I find a lot of time they'll have many different results.

Keep us posted as to your progress as well.

135 year old pianos need lots of work. The style 3 was a transitional design while Steinway was working on the designs we are used to seeing as the "modern" Steinway of today. I have one in original condition in my shop right now, but the owner wants a preservation, not a rebuilding. I am not happy with the idea of putting my name to an un-rebuilt piano that will not sound or play well.

These pianos will not sound like a modern piano. Nor should they. But without significant rebuilding they will not sound good no matter what. 130 plus years is a lot for any mechanical device under tremendous stress.
