Hit the local library sale today. Came up with an album from the Concertapes label.
Record No CS-25
Side 1 Tchaikovsky Nutcracker Suite
Side 2 Berlioz- Roman Carnival Overture Wagner-Overture to Die Meistersinger
Albums notes say this is first recording by the Symphony Of The Air.
No conductor is listed.
Answers anyone.
Thanks

No conductor is listed because there was none. It was a tribute to Toscanini from his former orchestra . I have never seen it on that label. It was on Roulette. But I think concertapes is an affiliated label.

It was also on Everest, in stereo. One edition of the Roulette issue also included the Dvorak 'New World.'

On Morris Levy's 'Roulette Records'? The pop label? Wow!

...namely, the NBC Symphony, in case anyone is unaware of that.
It made several more recordings under its new name, including a fascinating one of the Shostakovic First under Stokowski.

The stereo issue was on ConcertDisc and ConcerTapes, the labels created by the Fine Arts Quartet primarily to issue their recordings. The Everest was an inferior reissue. The Roulette was the first LP issue and in mono only, so the 'New World' never appeared in stereo.
Our release of 'historic stereo recordings' includes the 'Nutcracker Suite' from the ConcerTapes release.

Alphonso D'Artega was a light music conductor and arranger. There were several records issued of D'Artega and the SotA (not all of them were actually the SotA, or D'Artega, or both!).

... but not on the only record I have of that ensemble, which features John Barrows (in Françaix and Taffanel).

Absolutely...and my very favorite rendition of this music, ahead of Kertesz (though he's awfully good) and WAY ahead of Haitink (creamy-smooth but frankly soporific). FWIW, I have this Stokie/SotA on an early gold label American Decca LP, and the sonics too are first class in that format.
YMMV, of course. Cheers,
