Feb 4, 1939 Live

Please download this so we can discuss it. It probably was starling in 1939 but not today. It is not rushed or vicious. I think it shows off the intrinsic musicality of this wonderful piece.

Other two movements to follow

Interesting. The adagio introduction is lovely. I was really impressed by the care taken with the woodwind balances. He voices those chords with remarkable intelligence.

But the allegro is manic in the extreme. So much is lost! The highly contrapuntal development is a disaster. One can't hear the polyphony; rather, one has to supply it from memories of other performances. The lyrical parts approach vulgarity, a deady sin in Mozart.

It is really disturbing to hear the many instances where the ensemble is hanging on for dear life, on the edge of falling apart. For God's sake, the music should breathe. It should sing. All this did was give me chest pains.

I'm going to play my Walter and Maag recordings as an antidote.

It is on Iron Needle CD # IN 1400. Coupled with the 1944 Mozart 29(says 1934 on the Cd. If only!!) and the Mozart basson Con 11/8/47 live

I have that LP, and I cannot believe that the Iron Noodle issue would not be worse.

I'm afraid I think it's both of those things - also not well played. For all that, I find certain aspects of it perversely appealing.
