According to Joel Whitburn's Pop Memories 1890-1954 AT charted only one record and for only one week.

Which one?

BTW I have a recording of the Sousa band doing Washington Post from 1890!!. Too bad AT did not record before 1920. It would have been nice to see what tempos he took and how he phrased. Tne Sousa recording, denoised by Columbia, gives an overall impression of the nuances if not the actual sound. Remember, AT's first recording came when he was 53. His first electrical when he was 59. His NBC recordings started when he was 70. His real prime went unrecorded and vanished into the ears of the lucky concert and opera patrons.

The liner notes to my Tchaikovsky 1st recording with Horowitz/Toscanini say it was a 'really big seller' so I will go with that.

I beg to differ. You said Toscanini was 53 when he made his first recording and his 'real prime' went unrecorded. Rubbish! Conductors don't enter their 'real prime' until their 50s.

In 1890 the Sousa Band *was* 'pop'. Supposedly he saved the Columbian Exposition by appearing all summer.
