The current Gramophone has an ad by Berlin Classics which lists the Abendroth Beethoven 9th and characterizes it as a 'dispassionate' performance!

So let me see if I understand you: are you saying you think the copy writer intended to describe Abendroth's performance as one devoid of passion and emotion? Hmm . . . maybe this was a way to appeal to Gramophone's core readership after all!
