I am looking for a very accurate tuner. I have been looking at the Peterson tuners, mostly because those as the only ones I've heard of. They look good, but even used ones one eBay are pricey. Can someone suggest others? I think I'd like a strobe of some sort. Are there any other types that give the same kind of accuracy? I will be using it to tune guitars & a harp, so it needs direct input abilities. Many thanks.

For many years now, including when I tuned pianos professionally I have used a Zenon Chromatina 331 for tuning guitars, etc. - in fact, anything but pianos, and I have used it for reference on a piano tuning once when my Hale batteries went dead. I would advice avoiding any of the all digital tuners. Use an analog needle type, it's much easier to get it accurate with. The inherent accuracy of the tuners is probably the same, but the analogs are easier.

Howdy, Gerry. Any links to sources for analog tuners?

Thanks.

My bot picked this up quickly. I was gratified to see they still make the model 331 which I use. It is now only $86 and seems like a bargain to me. Gerry

Thanks for the tips. I think I want something that might be more accurate, though. I want to be able to tune down 1, 2 or 3 100ths of a semitone & peg it. But I couldn't find any specs on it anywhere, so I am guessing it won't do that. I agree on the digital tuners. The ones I have will get me close to normal tunings, but fall far short of what I am looking for.

For that kind of accuracy you gotta look at something like a Sanderson AccuTuner or an old Hale Sight - o- Tuner. I can't imagine why you need that kind of accuracy. I can't picture the instrument that will hold it that close. Do you realize how little 2 or 3 cents is?

Gerry, I don't care about that kind of accuracy, and really, all I want to do is try my hand at tuning. Whether or not I continue doing it or go on to a more thorough education is something that I haven't decided on just yet. So, for around $20-$50, what would you consider the best tuner for the job? (If there IS such a thing...)

Thanks,

I don't THINK you'll find much in that price range except the all digital things. I'd suggest that you try them out with a guitar and see how hard they are to use. Accuracy really isn't an issue, ease of use is. You did say you weren't planning on tuning pianos with this thing, didn't you? That's a whole other ball of wax.
