I recently went to a recital that ended with this piece and was reminded how enjoyable it is. My only recording of it is Bolet, which I like except for the coda and the lack of any truly soft dynamic levels (I think this is at least partially the fault of the recording quality). I had Horowitz's Sony recordings (in the 'complete masterworks', I think there were 2 renditions) and don't recall them making that great an impression on me, but I truly cannot remember what was good and/or bad about them. What are the classic, no-holds-barred recordings of this piece? Is there a Richter or Cziffra? Any good modern recordings (these types of Liszt pieces seem to have fallen out of favor with recitalists nowadays...)

Thanks in advance,

There's an excellent Richter Obermann (alongside much other excellent stuff) on 'Richter in the 1950s' vol. 3 (Parnassus).

Cziffra is good. Arrau's is one of the best.

Berman on DG is excellent and in better sound than the Richter from Parnassus. Cziffra is a good alternative too.

No doubt. But I really don't think the sound on the Richter is bad at all, given that we're talking 1950s Russian recordings.

Yes, there is a Richter and a Cziffra, however the ultimate performance on record of Vallee d'Obermann is by Horowitz.

I agree (trying, in vain, to model my own performance of it after his).

The Horowitz Vallee d'Oberman is clearly aided and abetted in the control room where the volume dials are manipulated without much subtlety. Other than that, it's a very effective performance.

Are you two recommending the Sony recording(s), which I specifically said I didn't care for in my post? Or is there another Horowitz recording that's preferable?

Thanks,
