I recall reading about a Fandrich vertical that was supposed to have a superior action similar to a grand in feel and repetition ability. Haven't seen or played one so I can't comment on the claim. - - /****************************************************** **************** * Gary M. I hadn't played my upright in a very long time until I decided to tune it last week (even temperament, for the experience, after the well on the small grand). Man! How heavy it feels after spending all my time on the grands. Acceptable because it's uniformly heavy and therefore predictable and controllable, but requires too much effort.

Since a vertical is called a vertical for just that very reason, the answer is no. Grands are horizontal. The laws of gravity apply heavily in this case.

...'grand' being the swahili translation for 'horizontal'

You might try www.fandrich.com. According to Larry Fine, author of The Piano Book, this company tries to manufacture a vertical piano with an action as close as possible to a grand. To answer the question of whether they actually do this might be best left to those on this newsgroup who might have tried out the action at a trade show. Or ask for a reference from the company and call the person up

Not really. There will be attempts at simulation, but until you have played a grand often enough, how do you know? And if you do know, I think you will detect a difference. The idea is for it to be responsive and musical.
