Does anybody know of a discography of recordings by Lovro von Matacic? What recordings of Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Berlioz, Bruckner, Mahler, Debussy, Schoenberg, or Berg have made it to CD?

Don't forget about his wonderful recording of Pagliacci, with Corelli, for EMI

As long as we're mentioning favorite Matacic recordings on CD:
1. Beethoven 3rd with the Czech Phil. My copy is on a Urania paired with a Barber of Baghdad Overture conducted by someone else. This may have shown up on other cd releases. On the whole, my favorite Beethoven 3rd.
2. Brahms 1st on Denon with a Tokyo Orchestra in a live performance. Really a vital urgent performance though the band is a bit scrappy. This was a late series for Matacic, probably his last recordings which included a Bruckner 7th (pretty good but I'm not a Bruckner maven), a Beethoven 7th (I think), and a composition of his own, The 'Confrontation' Symphony, which to me just sounded noisy.
3. A very good live Beethoven 9th on Praga with the Czech Phil (again I think) which has the distinction of having the only Czech language finale I've ever heard.
4. Also don't forget a whole slew of late 50's EMI's, largely Russian music including a solid Sheherazade, some Tchaikovsky tone poems (A nice Hamlet), and some Borodin. Alot of these were released in French double cd issues in the early 90's.
Happy hunting.

And I would add to that his recording with the La Scala forces of 'La Fanciulla del West' with Nilsson Gibin and Mongelli as a fearsome Jack Rance!

Another one not to forget (if it is to be acquired nowadays on CD) is the conductor's great performance of _Lohengrin_ at Bayreuth, 1959, with Konya, Grümmer, Gorr, Blanc, and Crass. I have it on LP (Melodram

It's also been released on Supraphon, but the Urania has better sound than the Supraphon I used to have (though for all I know Supraphon has released it since with improved sound; I think someone recently referred to a Japanese release).
Benackova (that looks like a misspelling, but I can't recall the right one off hand) doesn't hurt either.

It was later released (1978) by Pickwick on the Quintessence label. PMC-7089. Can't compare the sound to the Supraphone, since I have only the one I always really liked this performace. I'll have to look for the Bruckner.

I bought this when it came out, and then returned it right away, indignant that Praga would sell this without saying anything about the choice of language. But it's such a marvelous performance I had no choice but to get it again, later, when I was in a more forgiving mood.

....................................... Do yourself a favor, David and pick up the live 1960 Andrea Chenier (Vienna, I think) with Corelli, Tebaldi, and Bastianini. My very favorite 'Chenier'. Ed has it, but it's also available on Opera d'Oro. I'm waiting for my copy from Tower. $12. I've been getting by with a cassette of 'excerpts' that I made years ago from an Italian lp. This performance has real magic.
