Arny known recordings of Wagner by Guilini? I'd imagine him to be an interesting conductor for this repertoire. What other conductors that have rarely touched Wagner would you have liked to see more from? Who shores up most interest for you?

I've never seen any Wagner by Giulini.

I'd like to hear (more) Wagner by

* Gui * Busch (but I guess there must be more than Parsifal) * Ancerl * Jochum (I have refused so far to buy his Meistersinger with Fidi and Domingo) * Skrowaczewski (is there anything?)

<< Arny known recordings of Wagner by Guilini? >>

I've never seen any recorded Wagner by Giulini, but I know that he did play Wagner with the CSO at least once, as a guest conductor. If memory serves, it was in the 50s and the piece was the Prelude and Liebestod from Tristan & Isolde. Giulini occasionally would play a piece and then virtually never touch it again. Britten's War Requiem and Mahler's 4th Symphony also fall into this category. A tape of his performance of the Mahler 4th with the VSO would be interesting to hear, if it exists.

I don't know about complete performances, but his Tristan und Isolde Liebestod with the Minnesota Orchestra (on MMG) is superb

No, a question a while back on rmcr about great Brucknerians who didn't conduct Wagner threw up Giulini as an answer.

Abbado has now played some Wagner, although whether he is a great Brucknerian is debatable, I suppose.

For me, his last act of Don Giovanni is a portent of what his Wagner could be. His Beethoven PC with Michelangeli (2, and 3)is another case.

Having heard magnificent concert performances of Die Walküre and Tristan und Isolde conducted by Sir Charles Mackerras, I find it extraordinary that Bayreuth has not summoned him. (Maybe they did, and he refused
