I have my Yamaha p-80 hooked up to my stereo. In the earphones it sounds wonderful but from the speakers it is lackluster. I am looking for an Amp that will make it sound as good as with the (cheap) earphones I have. Possible? I have hanging out reading for awhile and have not noticed anyone addressing amps. Lots of opinions on keyboards but not much on amps.

I have been very happy with my Peavey KB/A 30. I have wired in an additional midrange and tweeter for added high end performance. Putting the amp under the left end of the keyboard and the aux. speakers under the right, I get a good stereo effect between the lows and highs.

I have a PA system (stereo, 1000watts) for my RD700 and really like the fact that I could power a small group if I ever actually play out ;-P

Don't limit yourself to just keyboard amps if you intend to play out.

I think most players would agree that the Roland KC series amps are the way to go. THey are reasonably priced and come in a variety of power ratings to suit your needs. OTOH, any performance type PA system will work. A good alternative might be a JBL Eon powered speaker. They come in 10 inch and 15 inch sizes and sound pretty good.

Go for the Motion Sound KP-100S or KP-200S.

The key with this amp is that it is the only stereo portable amplifier out there, and it rocks..... yah, you could get a P.A., but then you have to deal with two speaker cabinets and a mixer/power amp.

Check it out:

Read the review from Keyboard magazine:

How about a less expensive alternative? This will sound like heresy, but I recently got a Logitech Z560 powered surround sound setup for the PC for $136. The PC is my only source for music and this system had great reviews and it sounds pretty darned good. I hooked it up to the MP9500 to see how it compared and was pleasantly surprised. I have an older Bose system on it now but if it ever goes south I'd seriously consider the Z560. Dell had the best price.

If anyone else tries this, I'd be interested in hearing your opinion. I haven't seen it at all, but the specs don't seem to justify the price. The 200 watt model has two 10 inch speakers, and the 100 watt model has two 8 inch speakers. I would like to believe this thing is as good as the poster claims, but I will wait to hear from other folks who have tried it. No one in this little burg (Washington DC) seems to carry it.

I inherited two 100watt 3-way speakers (with 12 inch woofers) and an old 75 watt stereo amp. Setting the speaker cabinets in the vertical position about 3 feet apart, I put the P-80 on the speaker cabinets functioning as the keyboard stand and mounted the amp on the wall under the keyboard. It does the job for my music room with plenty of power for the room.

I have tried a few other audio speakers, and each speaker system colors the sound differently. But the head phones are good because the room and speakers cones have no effect on the sound quality.

When I bought the keyboard, I bought an amp that had power for gigs, single speaker, etc. But in my room, it sounded poor and returned it and preferred my audio setup.

I play trumpet in a variety of groups and play keyboard only good enough to want to have one in the house.

I personally own a JBL Pak EON 15 inch. It is a wonderful amplified speaker, that is bi-amped. The treble section runs on one amp, and the woofer runs on another.

This may be overkill, as it costs about half as much as your P-80 did (or at least it did when I bought my P-80). Having said that, it is a wonderful thing, self-contained, and weighs about 40 pounds. I've played with this in settings for a couple thousand people, and it has always had enough power for that.

Pianos need to be overamplified to sound really good. You also need a keyboard amp, as a guitar amp can't produce the low notes, and a bass amp can't produce the high notes.

Does that help?
