This has most often been my experience. When I first started getting interested in Wagner (which wasn't that long ago), I went to the library one day and was ecstatic to see that they had Furtwaengler's EMI recording of Tristan. I came home and got prepared for a dive into decadence, only to discover that the discs were in such bad shape that they were barely playable. One of the discs was so badly scratched that it wouldn't play at all, and the other three all skipped. I can only assume that Nietzsche had borrowed them at one point and attempted to break them in half.
Anyway, shortly after that, my attempts at music piracy having been foiled, I had to actually buy the Furtwaengler set myself. Oh, the horror!
