When should I have my students begin to practice scales? Does age matter?

Thank you for posting.

As soon as they start to learn the notes in each scale it would be beneficial to learn them, and the fingering for them since this it is integral in eventual proper playing.

You will know best as they are your students and have a better judgement of their skills/abilities and comprehension. If you try having one of your students practice scales and they simply cannot get it, then wait and have them try again at a later date.

If the child picks it up very quickly and comprehends the workings of each scale then you will have more insight to their skills/abilities and can have the progress further and possibly more rapidly.

Some young ones have untapped abilities, and you are in a wonderful position to discover the more gifted ones.
