This makes me want to ask , which composers were Muslim or Jewish ? What kind of piano styles are attributed to either of these cultures ? I am not trying to start a race riot but genuinely curious.

<snipped>

Google 'Muslim composers' 29 Google 'Jewish composers' 2900

Someone's PR director needs to get to work on this.

If you mean the guy who wrote 'Yankee Doodle Dandy,' his name was George M. Cohan, and he was not Jewish.

A stupid question with stupid answers.

If you're only looking from a European-based conception of music, using a tool which is geared towards a Western market, it may not come as a surprise. Like looking up Jewish Muezzins, it's a foolish idea. There are certainly many times as many Muslim 'composers' than Jewish in the world, simple game of population numbers. Just as there are many times as many Christian (background) composers in the European tradition than Jewish (again, it's based on population size). Also there are and have been many great Jewish musicians/composers in musical traditions from the Muslim world.

I'll sit and listen to Abdullah Ibrahim until I absolutely, positively have to go somewhere. Then I'll be late.

Not to prolong or give credence to a stupid post, but....

Cat Stevens is Muslim.

Joke. Levity. Humor.

I am not a world musicologist nor do I play one on a reality-based TV show. But I do know enough to know that if you drift far enough back, say the 9th century, you'll find Western Classical and Eastern Classical composers influenced each other regardless of their religion or ethnicity; Western melody has influenced the East as has Eastern complex rhythm influenced the West.

Besides I was looking more specifically for any of either persuasion that have made a profound impact on classical piano style (responding partially to Don's post) Are you telling me there's a whole bunch of piano competitions that I've been missing out on?

Yes, and the Peace Train derailed when Cat Stevens (who converted to the faith) agreed that Salman Rushdie (I KNOW I don't know how to spell his name ) should be killed for blaspheme.

You can spell Rushdie, but can't spell blasphemy.
