Folks,

I'm looking at a player piano, labeled 'Witton and Witton, London'. It's supposedly from around 1900, cabinet in great shape, piano plays well, player mechanism seems to work well.

I know nothing about player pianos - but I collect other old mechanical marvels and I'm considering adding this to the collection instead of buying a standard small piano for the house. Price tag is $1250.

Any help?

Thanks,

Yes. Go find $1250.00 worth of old tables, jars, or other old stuff and leave this 15,000$ or so restoration project to someone else to fall for. Honest.

<chuckle>

Thanks Larry.

OK, I get the point - so if I want an older player piano, what do I look for?

I've managed to keep an old music box, mechanical pinball, and jukebox from driving me either insane or to poverty, so I'm pretty sure that if I get some help from those in the know I won't be too bad off...

Thanks!

If you are just dead set on owning one, I understand. The one you've found is as good as any, since most any you find is going to have to have a total restoration. So budget accordingly!

The person on this board who can help advise you the best is Pianoguy. If he hasn't already, maybe he'll jump in. He is one of the best in the business with these pianos. He can point you to several websites that will help you find parts, pianos, info, etc. I don't know them because I try as hard as I can to avoid having to deal with old player pianos.

Of course you could buy a new one. Story & Clark still builds them. I assume they have a website. I don't care much for their console sized stuff, but I can't speak to the quality of their upright paper roll players. They may be ok.

Good luck.......you're gonna need it.....
