Having just treated myself to an early Christmas present of Books I and II of the WTC (a rather nice Associated Board edition with some good commentary) I want to know which are generally regarded as the easiest? I learnt Prelude No 1 Book 1 in C major years ago, and am now of intermediate standard.
Some of them look absolutely fearsome, but there are no tempo markings (as is normal with Bach, of course), so it is hard to know which are truly hard.
Sorry if this has been posted - I have googled but without much success.
TIA

If you can cope with 6 sharps, the F# major, Book 1 prelude is easy and beautiful. A great 2 voice composition.
In general the pieces in Book 1 are easier than the pieces in book 2.

Ditto for Prelude 3 in Book 1. C# major which means all 7 notes are sharped. Most editions have it marked as non-legato and vivace (about MM=84 per measure), but you can certainly slow it down to a manageable speed. In fact, the most striking performance I have heard so far was from a student with 12 years of lessons, who played it just the opposite - legato and non-vivace. Absolutely beautiful.
