Is there any difference in the action in the YDP series vs. the Clavinova. In other words, does the YDP have the same hammer action?

Yes there is a large difference in the action of the YDP action and the Clavinova action.

The YDP action is not a graded hammer action as is used in the current CLP & CVP actions. The graded hammer action uses varying weights; heavier in the bass and lighter in the treble for a more realistic piano feel.

The YDP's are a Yamaha digital piano but they are actually handled through the portable keyboard division.

The actions are different as stated. Also I would avoid the YDP-121 for the fact that although a decent unit, it does not have MIDI capability. For the same amount of money you can have the P-120 that has the graded action and MIDI.

HTH,
